This publication provides projections for key education statistics. It includes statistics on enrollment, graduates, teachers, and expenditures in elementary and secondary schools, and enrollment and earned degrees conferred expenditures of degree-granting institutions. For the nation, the tables, figures, and text contain data on enrollment, teachers, graduates, and expenditures for the past 14 years and projections to the year 2021. For the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the tables, figures, and text contain data on projections of public elementary and secondary enrollment and public high school graduates to the year 2021. In addition, the report includes a methodology section describing models and assumptions used to develop national and state-level projections.

The 2003 Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) conference was held in Brisbane in August 2003. This paper begins with the premise that the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) collects a vast amount of data about the public vocational education and training (VET) sector. Some, but not enough, data are collected about the private sector and this paper aims to remedy the situation. The paper describes the various NCVER statistical collections that contain data on VET, what they cover and what they do not cover, with some data from each collection providing context. The nest section identifies the gaps and makes a case for expanding the collections. A range of principles that the author argues should govern any expansion of the NCVER collections is given followed by a range of options governed by the principles. Finally, consultations having begun with a wide range of stakeholders as part of a major push toward total VET collections, the author outlines two areas that NCVER is pursuing immediately: (1) publication of data on private provision that is supplied to NCVER but is considered ‘out of scope’; and (2) data on publicly funded VET which does not appear in the NCVER collection because it is funded by government departments other than the training authorities, notably training to prison inmates, police and defence personnel and health workers. This paper provides a broad overview of the nature of data linkage, highlights possible uses in the VET sector and reviews key challenges data linkage presents as a research methodology. Using the insights gained from past data linkage projects and taking into account the privacy and ethical concerns, a set of principles for data linkage are presented. These provide researchers with a set of basic steps to draw on when embarking upon a data linkage project. Finally, future directions for data linkage in VET research are explored.

This report begins with a methodological section detailing the procedures used for collecting and summarising the data for each state. Results are then reported via data analyses within two primary groupings of states: those with either increasing or decreasing vocational enrolments. An examination of policy implementation and programmatic reforms suggests that states evidencing stable or increased vocational enrolments are characterised by proactive attempts to reform or restructure vocational education. This infographic provides a snapshot of apprenticeships and traineeships across Australia. It presents statistics on commencements, completions, cancellations and withdrawals and those currently in training. Unless stated otherwise, data is derived using the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection no.98, (December 2018 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.

Due to lags in processing, the most recent figures are estimated (for training activity from December quarter 2016 to September quarter 2018). The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers, based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. Whereas non-estimated data reflects the actual data submitted by each jurisdiction which is also subject to change. Further details on the methodology can be found at 'Estimation of apprentice and trainee statistics' [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 100.15]. More information including longer term trends, detailed data and explanatory notes are available. The states and territories are diverse in terms of economies, industry and VET policy and this needs to be considered in any detailed analysis.

There were 267,385 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2018, a decrease of 0.6 per cent from 30 September 2017. In the September quarter 2018, compared with the September quarter 2017: commencements decreased by 5.0 per cent, to 34,290; completions decreased by 9.6 per cent, to 20,765; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 2.4 per cent, to 23,725. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2018, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2017: commencements decreased by 1.6 per cent, to 158,640; completions decreased by 10.4 per cent, to 86,880; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 0.8 per cent, to 91,565.

This article provides a forecast for the Australian labour market over the next ten years and an analysis of threats and opportunities pertinent to employment growth. The first section presents basecase forecasts of employment in Australia by occupation for the period 1998-2010, reliant on the assumption that aggregate employment growth will average 1.5 per cent over this period. The authors then examine threats to the employment growth predicted in the basecase, i.e. a wage explosion, a loss of investor confidence, and a sharp deterioration in the terms of trade. This is followed by an analysis of the opportunities for greater employment growth than that suggested in the basecase. The MONASH methodology for generating occupational forecasts is used. MONASH is characterised as a dynamic general equilibrium model of Australia distinguishing 113 industries and 340 occupations. A device for explaining MONASH results, the factor-price-frontier (FPF) model, is included in the appendix and all mechanisms responsible for the results are explained within the article. The final section summarises the results and presents concluding remarks. The research revealed that the fastest growing occupations would be those requiring people skills or computer skills. The slowest growing occupations would be those requiring dexterity and strength. Show less

The 2019 edition of the OECD Employment Outlook presents new evidence on changes in job stability, underemployment and the share of well-paid jobs, and discusses the policy implications of these changes with respect to how technology, globalisation, population ageing, and other megatrends are transforming the labour market in OECD countries. The report discusses how labour market regulation might be used to extend rights and protections beyond standard employees, as well as to rebalance bargaining power between employers and workers. It analyses how collective bargaining and social dialogue can be mobilised to address emerging challenges in the labour market, looking at the role of government, social partners and new forms of collective organisation. The role of adult learning is also addressed, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable groups. And finally the report also assesses challenges for social protection policies, presenting evidence on the support gaps affecting different types of worker, and discussing reform avenues for preserving and strengthening the key stabilising role of social protection systems.
